 Friday, November 20th: Ramble – Al Thakhira Beach Walk, Al Khor Area

 

Description: This walk will include a variety of scenery: mangroves, old sea shore, desert, out crops and much bird life. The approximate length is 10 km. The expected duration will be 2.5 - 3 hours, allowing plenty of time to stop, look and use cameras. The area is very pleasant, so those who wish may like to bring morning tea/ lunch to picnic at the end of the walk. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is not necessary.

 
What to Bring: Wear good walking shoes. There is always the possibility of sharp objects in the sand and some of the terrain is rocky. Make sure you have sun block, a hat and water. Bring lunch, too, if you wish. Rain coats??? Who knows? Watch the weather forecast - it can rain in November!!!
Restrictions: 
  • Open to all who wish to participate.
  • Not suitable for small children (unless in a back pack), due to our walking pace.
  • No dogs – there will be many birds that we wish to see!!!!

Rendezvous & Times: “Five Billboard Intersection”, Al Khor (See directions below.)
                                   Meet at:       8:00 AM    
                                   Depart at:    8:30 AM, sharp
Directions:

We will drive to the trailhead to start the walk from the meeting place at the “five billboards intersection”. It takes at least 30 minutes to drive from Doha to Al Khor on the Ras Laffan Highway, barring delays, so please plan accordingly.

  • You are going in the direction of Al Thakhira. 
  • When approaching Al Khor from Doha, Go straight across all of the six Roundabouts (RA)!!
  • Pass through the AL Khor Gates (the two large stone columns at either side of the road) then watch for the petrol station on the left (the Coastal Petrol Station). 
    • RA #1.     Just past the Coastal Petrol Station - Go STRAIGHT
    • RA #2.     At Big LULU billboard - Go STRAIGHT
    • RA #3.     Palm Trees in Middle - Go STRAIGHT
    • RA #4.     Intersection with Al Khor Corniche - Go STRAIGHT
    • RA #5.     At end of small Industrial Area - Go STRAIGHT
    • RA #6.     At turn off to Al Khor Community - Go STRAIGHT
  • Continue on for 1km, then take the turn on the right (This is the first turn on the right after the Community RA).
  • Pull onto the gravel, 50m around the corner. This corner has five billboards. The prominent one says amongst its  notices:

“Qatar Real Estate Investment Company, Mansell, and ALCAT”
