RAMBLE 2009-02-27: THE FULAIYYEH DEPRESSION
Description: This overnight camping trip will take us to the Fulaiyyeh Depression, an isolated spot that is an easy drive from Doha.
What to expect: A shallow depression called a dissolution sinkhole filled with small trees and shrubs; it’s a good location to see nocturnal critters. A second depression about 3 km south is large and deep enough to contain a Barchan dune named Fulaihah. This would be a great destination for a walk the morning after.
Date: 2009-02-27
Meeting Time: 2:00pm. Leave about 35 minutes to get to Al-Wakrah from Doha.
Meeting Place: The showroom of the Cadillac and Hummer dealer just 50m to the right after the first roundabout in Wakrah [Same location as the Hidden Valley ramble].
Final Destination: We will go west from Al-Wakrah towards Al Kharrarah, through Al Wukair, and across Messaid Road. We will take the Ghisham Farm (Mazra'at al Ghisham) turn south until roughly the end of the road. From the main road, the camp is about 1.8 km east along a track. The GPS Coordinates of the Fulaiyyeh Depression are 24° 51.300'N 51° 16.483'E.
Vehicles: Four-wheel drive is necessary for the last 1.8 km. If you have a four-wheel drive, bring it; if in a saloon, we will work out a shuttle arrangement at the camping site (but try to minimize your equipment).
What to Bring: Whatever camping equipment you think you need. Remember that it can still get cold at night, so bring plenty of warm clothing. Please consult the Qatar Camping Guide prepared by the leaders.
FAQ: Q — I’ve never camped before, and the Qatar Camping Guide makes it sound very complicated. Should I just give up? A — No, absolutely not. We are delighted to have first-time campers. It’s really not that bad. Please e-mail the rambling coordinator for guidance and encouragement.
Leaders: Michael and Bronwyn Donaldson (mobile 617 8398) along with Morgan and Thania Freele (mobile 685-8492).
